After BJP, Congress Targets Bengal CM Mamata Over RG Kar Protests

RG Kar case: The Congress and BJP are criticizing the Mamata Banerjee government in the RG Kar case, with both parties alleging threats made to doctors and protesters.

The Congress and the BJP may be arch-rivals but the two parties seem to be speaking in similar tones and using the same issues in the RG Kar case to target the Mamata Banerjee government in Bengal. After the BJP, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has alleged that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee threatened doctors over the RG Kar rape-murder protests. 

Earlier, the BJP accused Mamata Banerjee of threatening students and protesters. "You [Mamata Banerjee] have threatened the agitating Medical Students & Junior Doctors and warned them about taking action against them if they continue their agitation. You even tried to scare them of the dire consequences including their career getting hampered if you lodge FIRs against them," Suvendu Adhikari had said.

However, the Bengal CM clarified that she "did not utter a single word against the (medical etc.) students or their movements". "I totally support their movement. Their movement is genuine. I never threatened them, as some people are accusing me of doing. This allegation is completely false," she said.

She further said that her ire was directed against the BJP. "I have spoken against them [BJP] because, with the support of the Government of India, they are threatening the democracy in our State and trying to create anarchy. With support from Centre, they are trying to create lawlessness and I have raised my voice against them," she stated in an X post.

Adhir Ranjan On Mamata Banerjee And RG Kar Case

Asserting that the protesting doctors did not have any political affiliation, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said: "Mamata Banerjee is threatening the doctors. These doctors have not come out on the streets to seek votes against Mamata for any election. They have come out on the streets only to demand justice. Mamata Banerjee is threatening them by saying that no FIR will be filed against them. These doctors do not belong to any party. No party should try to take advantage of this."

Adhir Ranjan also sought to reply to the TMC's allegation against President Droupadi Murmu over her 'enough is enough' address. He said: "The President spoke about the whole country... There is no need to be angry about this... We do not think that there is a need for President's rule in Bengal."

On the CBI investigation of the RG Kar case, Adhir Ranjan said: "We have expressed our reservations about the CBI's work before. But that does not mean that Mamata Banerjee can evade her responsibility. If Mamata wants justice for the victim, she should submit an affidavit in the court and express that she wants to help get the culprits punished. But she is not doing so."
