A six-year-old boy died after being hit by an airbag that got activated when a vehicle met with an accident and struck their car in Navi Mumbai's Vashi area. The child was sitting in the front seat when the accident took place. The SUV ahead of their car crashed into a median and landed on the bonnet of their car.
The boy was travelling with his father and two cousins towards Koparkhairane in a Wagon R.
"Due to the accident, the airbags of the wagon R got deployed. Prima facie, it appears that the driver was saved because of the airbag, but on the passenger seat, where the boy was sitting, it got ruptured," Assistant Police Inspector Deepak Gavit said.
The boy fell unconscious and was pulled out by bystanders. He was rushed to Vashi General Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. "The doctors said the cause of his death was due to suffocation. It is suspected that the sudden explosion of the airbag could be the probable reason. Further investigation is underway," the officer added.
