3 Dead, 8 Injured As Landslide Blocks Kedarnath Yatra Route Near Chhoti Gadhera

A landslide near Chhoti Gadhera on the Kedarnath Yatra route killed three and injured eight, blocking the path. PWD and disaster response teams are working to clear debris and restore access.

 

A tragic landslide struck the Kedarnath Yatra route near Chhoti Gadhera, leaving three dead and eight injured. The incident has led to a complete blockade of the pilgrimage path due to falling boulders and debris. The Public Works Department (PWD), along with multiple disaster response teams, has launched urgent restoration and relief efforts.

This comes at a time when landslides are disrupting several major pilgrimage routes in the region, including the Amarnath Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir.

Landslide Hits Kedarnath Route Near Gaurikund

The landslide occurred approximately 1 km ahead of Gaurikund on the pedestrian trail to Kedarnath. Large boulders and debris tumbled down the hillside, completely cutting off the route for pilgrims. Emergency services were immediately alerted to manage the situation and assist the stranded.

Three people lost their lives in the incident, while eight others sustained injuries and have been shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. The area remains hazardous due to unstable terrain, prompting authorities to temporarily restrict movement along the route.

 

Multi-Agency Relief Operation Underway

Restoration efforts are being led by the Public Works Department (PWD), which is working tirelessly to clear the debris and reopen the path. Simultaneously, personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), District Disaster Response Force (DDRF), and district police are actively stationed at both ends of the affected section to support and guide pilgrims.

Monsoon Woes Continue: Landslides Disrupt Other Pilgrimage Routes

This incident is part of a larger trend of monsoon-induced landslides impacting major pilgrimage routes across northern India. The Amarnath Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir has also faced disruptions due to similar landslides, forcing temporary halts and evacuation of devotees from high-risk zones. The recurrent natural disasters underscore the vulnerability of these mountainous regions during the monsoon season.

Authorities have urged pilgrims to remain patient and follow official advisories as clearance and safety operations continue. The safety and well-being of all devotees remain the top priority.
