A London-based recruiter recently shared a photo of his broken keyboard on the social media platform Linkedin, claiming he smashed it in frustration after a candidate rejected a job offer at the last moment. His post quickly went viral with internet users sharing their take on the whole situation.


Ethan Mooney, a recruitment consultant, explained that the candidate was set for a second-stage interview at 9:30 am but failed to show up. Thirty minutes later, Mooney received a text from the candidate, stating that he had accepted another job offer.


Frustrated, Mooney took his anger out on his keyboard. "In my defence, I couldn't find the F*** key. Who says recruiters don't care?" he remarked.


Social media users flooded the comments section with their thoughts on the situation. While some highlighted the imbalances that can arise in the hiring process from the recruiter's side, others expressed sympathy for Mooney’s frustration.



“Imagine if candidates posted every time a recruiter ghosted them after an interview. And what about when candidates spend hours applying and never hear back? Respect works both ways,” wrote one of the internet users.


A second user added, “Care about your KPIs, pocket, and numbers? Sure. But candidates have to look out for number one too. You guys have no loyalty. If the client doesn’t like the CV, or if an informal chat or interview goes poorly, the candidate gets ignored and face disappointment from said recruiter. So why fuss when the tables are turned? The candidate probably received a better offer that you weren’t prepared to fight for, or your client didn’t value them enough to meet their requests.”


“Remember this next time you tell a candidate that they weren't selected and you give no further feedback whatsoever. What did you weigh in your decision? What was the red flag that made you decide? What were the shortcomings in their profile? An honest rejection letter with some constructive feedback goes a long way and will help the candidate highlight their strong points and polish their edges... Recruiters these days have lost all humanity!” wrote a third user.
