Tata Motors logged its peak monthly sales in November, owing to strong demand for the sports utility vehicles amid the festive season, a top official from the company said. 


In conversation with PTI, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Managing Director, Shailesh Chandra, said that the automaker sold about 53,000 units in November, marking an increase of 8 per cent against October, and up by 30 per cent against sales recorded in November 2022. 


The firm reported robust sales performance in the festive period of the year, which lasted for about 47 days. The registrations during the period stood at 79,374 units, up by 18 per cent against the corresponding period a year earlier. 


“We had a very strong festive season, which I would attribute mainly to the newly launched facelifted Nexon, Harrier, Safari, and the iCNG range. And therefore, our VAHAN registrations, or real sale as we call it, was the highest ever in our history,” Chandra noted. 


He stated that the passenger vehicle segment is set to log its record best performance in the current fiscal year and the industry is estimated to surpass the 40-lakh cumulative sales mark.


Replying to whether this year could be a record one for the company in terms of sales, Chandra said, “Yes, absolutely, for industry as well as for us. The company's market share in terms of retail sales crossed the 15 per cent-mark last month.”


The executive stated that the firm’s SUV portfolio drove the growth in retail sales in the last few months. In the SUV segment, Nexon and Punch remained at the top two positions last month, Chandra said. “In terms of overall SUV numbers, we were at number two position last month. Led by Tiago and Altroz, the company has also retained second spot in the hatchback segment,” he added.


The company official noted that the firm has moved to VAHAN (vehicle registration data), from wholesale figures, as a measure of sales and market share. “It is helping us bring about a cultural change in the way people operate at the ground level from the dealer to the sales team. The focus is on demand generation, rather than managing off-take from OEM to dealers,” he said. 


Giving a sales outlook after the festive season, Chandra stated that there should be a reduction in inquiries compared to the festive period. “But, I am sure that this level of demand should sustain... A strong demand should remain in the range of 3.3-3.5 lakh per month for the PV segment,” the official noted.
