The two key equity benchmarks, Sensex and Nifty, on Monday, ended trading at fresh highs. Boosted by the decisive victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Assembly Elections in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan, the stock market rallied throughout the day and created new records. 


Both the indices climbed over 2 per cent during the day. The BSE Sensex crossed the 68,500 mark and climbed nearly 1,400 points to close at 68,865.12, after hitting a fresh lifetime high of 68,918.22 during the day. The NSE Nifty50 jumped over 400 points and stood way beyond the 20,000 mark at 20,686.80 as the trading session closed on Monday.


On the 30-share Sensex platform, apart from two stocks, all the firms were trading in green. ICICI Bank, SBI, L&T, Kotak Bank, and IndusInd Bank emerged as the prime gainers for the day. Tata Motors and Wipro remained the only stocks in red on the index. 


The broader markets closed trading entirely in green, with the Nifty 100 and Nifty Next 50 leading the gains after Nifty50 with an increase of 2.06 per cent and 1.94 per cent respectively. 






Sectorally, most of the indices except two ended in the green. The Nifty Financial Services 25/50 shot through the roof and soared over 13 per cent during the day. Other major winners included the Nifty PSU Bank and the Nifty Bank indices, which gained 3.85 per cent and 3.61 per cent respectively. The Nifty Media and Pharma indices remained the only losers during the day and dragged 0.78 per cent and 0.18 per cent respectively. 


In the previous session on Friday, the two key equity benchmarks, Sensex and Nifty, on Friday, ended trading on a high note, boosted by the GDP data for the second quarter, released a day earlier, which beat analysts’ estimates. The BSE Sensex rallied almost 500 points to close at 67,481.19, while the NSE Nifty50 continued its streak above the 20,000 mark for the third consecutive trading session. The Nifty50 reached a fresh record high and touched 20,291.55, before closing at 20,267.90, up by 134.75 points.


The domestic rupee depreciated 3 paise to close at 83.36 (provisional) against the US dollar on Monday. The rupee opened at 83.28 against the greenback in morning trade.The domestic currency stood at 83.33 against the American dollar at the end of the previous trading session on Friday.
