The job market for recent graduates is showing positive signs of improvement. Nearly 72 per cent of employers plan to hire fresh graduates between July and December 2024, according to the TeamLease EdTech’s Career Outlook Report. This represents a 4 per cent increase from the first half of 2024 and a significant 7 per cent rise compared to the same period in 2023.
The report highlights that e-commerce and tech startups, engineering and infrastructure, and retail are the top three industries seeking new talent. Specifically, 61 per cent of employers in e-commerce and tech startups, 59 per cent in engineering and infrastructure, and 54 per cent in retail are planning to recruit fresh graduates. Among cities, Bangalore leads with 74 per cent of employers looking to hire recent graduates, followed by Mumbai at 60 per cent and Chennai at 54 per cent.
Experts have noted that, contrary to widespread concerns about joblessness and unemployability among recent graduates, the report reveals a promising shift in employers' hiring intentions in the second half.
Shantanu Rooj, founder and CEO of TeamLease EdTech, explained, “The job market is evolving rapidly with technology and digital skills taking centre stage. We are seeing a clear demand for roles that blend technical expertise with creative problem-solving. The real game-changer is the growing recognition of the need for stronger industry-academia partnerships. It is an exciting time for both freshers and employers as we bridge the gap between education and industry requirements.”
The report highlights several in-demand job roles for recent graduates, including full stack developer, SEO executive, digital sales associate, and UI/UX designer. It notes that employers are primarily looking for candidates with expertise in cybersecurity, cloud computing, data analytics, and SEO.
The need for stronger industry-academia collaboration is becoming more significant, with 70 per cent of employers recommending the integration of experiential learning into curricula and 62 per cent supporting partnerships between academia and industry to better align academic training with real-world requirements. Additionally, degree apprenticeships remain in steady demand, particularly in manufacturing, where 25 per cent of employers plan to hire degree apprentices. Engineering and infrastructure follow with 19 per cent, while construction and real estate account for 11 per cent.
