Over 14 crore jobs have been reported so far by 2.7 crore registered micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) under the Ministry of MSMEs' Udyam portal. As of Thursday, the platform showed a total employment count of 14.03 crore. The figures include 13.12 crore jobs from 1.93 crore MSMEs directly registered on the Udyam portal and an additional 91.10 lakh jobs from 77.97 lakh units registered through the Udyam Assist Platform (UAP).
Udyam, an online platform launched by the MSME Ministry in 2020, facilitates the registration of MSMEs. Udyam registration is a free, entirely digital, and paperless process based on self-declaration. It is a prerequisite for accessing benefits from the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises, including the Credit Guarantee Scheme, public procurement policy, advantages in Government Tenders, and protection against delayed payments.
Upon successful registration, an e-certificate known as the "Udyam Registration Certificate" is issued online. Registration requires Aadhaar, PAN, and GST numbers. The Udyam portal also integrates with Income Tax and GST Identification systems and the government e-marketplace. Investment and turnover details are automatically retrieved from government databases.

According to a Financial Express report, the platform witnessed a remarkable increase of over 1 crore jobs in just under a month. The portal surpassed the 13-crore reported job mark in August.
According to data shared by the Minister of State in the MSME Ministry Bhanu Pratap Singh Verma in Rajya Sabha, in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, a total of 63,248 individuals employed in the MSME sector lost their jobs from July 1, 2020, to July 20, 2022. This figure includes 19,862 job losses in the fiscal year 2021 and 42,662 in the fiscal year 2022. While, up to July in the fiscal year 2023, 724 additional job losses were reported.
During the budget session, Minister Verma said that the government does not maintain comprehensive data on job losses in the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector due to its presence in both formal and informal economic sectors.
