Domestic air passenger traffic in India surged in October, official data revealed. The country’s domestic air traffic climbed 5.3 per cent in October 2024 and reached 1.36 crore passengers, the latest data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) revealed.
Comparatively, the domestic passenger traffic reached 1.26 crore in the same month a year earlier, reported The Financial Express.
Amongst the airlines, budget carrier IndiGo dominated the air passenger traffic and flew 84.6 lakh passengers in the period under review. The airline controlled 63.3 per cent of the overall market share.
Following it, Air India and Vistara made their mark in the domestic aviation market and transported 26.48 lakh passengers and 12.43 lakh passengers respectively.

The passenger tally for Air India also includes individuals flown by the carrier’s budget airline, Air India Express, after its subsidiary AIX Connect merged with Air India Express on October 1, 2024. The new merged entity now operates flights as Air India Express under the Air India brand.
The collective market share of Air India for the month under review stood at 19.4 per cent, while Vistara accounted for a 9.1 per cent share of the market.
Notably, both Air India and Vistara are owned by the Tata Group. Together, these carriers accounted for 28.5 per cent of the domestic air passenger traffic in October 2024.
At the same time, SpiceJet accounted for 3.35 lakh passengers and 2.4 per cent of the overall market share in the month. In comparison, Akasa Air transported 6.16 lakh passengers in October and controlled 5.4 per cent of the domestic air traffic in the period, the DGCA data revealed.
With regards to the on-time performance (OTP) of the airlines, IndiGo dominated with an OTP of 71.9 per cent at four major metro airports, namely, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru. On the other hand, the lowest OTP was clocked by Alliance Air, which is a government-run airline, the data showed.
