First Time In 16 Years I'm Open To Work: Says Amazon’s Laid off Employee In Her LinkedIn Post

An employee affected by the recent layoff at Amazon said in her LinkedIn post that she is open to work for the first time in 16 years. Laura McCaffrey, former Senior Director of Strategic Employer Partnership at One Medical, was among hundreds of employees who were part of Amazon's recent job cuts in its healthcare divisions.

In one of her LinkedIn posts, McCaffrey wrote, “After almost 16 years at One Medical, the recent round of layoffs has hit my team (the Strategy Team). The wonderful chapter of my time at One Medical has come to an end.”

“I interviewed with One Medical way back in 2008 when it was just a small start-up with four doctor’s offices in San Francisco. I remember being told, “if you want to change healthcare, this is the place to work.” I walked away from that interview, being inspired and impressed by the mission, the passion, and the people I met, some of whom are still dear friends. I immediately knew it was where I belonged. Lucky for me and lucky for One Medical, they agreed and hired me,” she added.

“I don’t know the exact number - but I was somewhere in the first 25 employees. Over the next decade and a half as many of the original hires moved on, our objectives grew, our locations expanded, we went through an IPO, and were finally acquired by Amazon. Throughout the changes of One Medical, I’ve proudly remained devoted to our mission,” her post reads.

She said that the journey from a small doctor’s office to the recent Amazon acquisition has been transformational. “Raising the bar for how healthcare is offered and seeing so many patients benefit from the innovations over the years has been incredible. I’m excited for the future of One Medical. More than I ever could have imagined in my interview in 2008, One Medical has changed healthcare and will continue to do so,” McCaffrey said.

“For my One Medical colleges who’ve been impacted by these layoffs - my heart is with you, I’ll keep my eye out to connect people to open positions, and I’m available to talk! Being laid off from a company I’ve dedicated my whole career to is a roller coaster of emotions. That being said, I’m looking forward to finding a new opportunity where I can apply the experience I’ve gained in bringing a healthcare start-up from a passionate vision to a national solution,” she added.

McCaffrey concluded her post, saying, “I’m going to take some time to reflect on what I want to dive into next. I’m not in a hurry, but I am for the first time in 16 years #opentowork.”

On Tuesday, e-commerce major Amazon revealed plans for job reductions affecting hundreds of employees in its healthcare divisions, involving Amazon Pharmacy and One Medical, as part of a broader cost-saving drive. Last year, Amazon downsized its workforce by over 27,000 employees. Furthermore, earlier this year, the company initiated job cuts across multiple units, including Prime Video, MGM Studios, Buy with Prime, Twitch, and Audible.
