With studies showing that oral hygiene is related to cardiac health, dental care has become all the more important. Among the companies investing in 'herbal' dental care products are Patanjali Ayurved, Colgate, Himalaya, Vicco, Dabur, Dr Jaikaran, etc.
Patanjali Ayurved claims that Dant Kanti is not just a toothpaste brand, but a revolution in oral care. In today's health-conscious world, herbal toothpastes like Dant Kanti are emerging as a safe and healthy alternative. The company says this Ayurvedic toothpaste contains natural and traditional herbs like cloves, pippali, vidanga, and peppermint oil, which not only help eliminate bacteria but also keep the mouth healthy and fresh.

According to Patanjali, "Dant Kanti's uniqueness lies in its Ayurvedic formulation, which is effective in preventing microorganisms that cause gingivitis and eliminating bad breath. Clinical studies conducted by Karmic Lifesciences LLP have proven Dant Kanti's effectiveness. This toothpaste is capable of reducing plaque, controlling Total Volatile Sulfur Compounds (TVSC), removing external stains from teeth, and improving overall oral hygiene. These studies have also confirmed that its use causes no adverse effects in the mouth. It's a unique blend of traditional knowledge and modern technology."
Patanjali also claims, "Regular use of Dant Kanti toothpaste helps protect teeth and gums from infection. It also helps prevent tooth decay, making it an ideal choice for both adults and children. Its natural ingredients protect against the harmful effects of chemicals that may be present in ordinary toothpastes. This toothpaste is globally recognized for its safety and effectiveness, making it a trusted name."
Dr Jaikaran states that its Herbodent line of toothpastes is the "perfect protector against dental problems like gum bleeding, cavity, sensitivity and pyorrhea and has been a proven to fight out foe-dental microbes". Similarly, Colgate claims its Herbal toothpaste contains natural ingredients like Eucalyptus, Tea Tree Oil, and Chamomile, which provide a refreshing experience.
Dabur, which has an extensive line-up of "herbal" toothpastes, boasts of products like Babool, Meswak, and Red. It claims that these products use "clinically proven Ayurvedic formula".
Similarly, Vicco claims its Vajradanti Paste is "made with 18 Ayurvedic herbs and barks" and offers natural protection against dental issues.
Irrespective of the brand one might prefer, a general practice of basic oral hygiene is definitely desirable to prevent a host of diseases and bad breath.
Are Herbal Toothpastes Purely 'Herbal'?
A document from the Department of Consumer Affairs shows that the so-called "herbal" toothpastes are not so in nature in the real sense of 'herbal'. "None of the brands tested by Consumer Voice [the publication shared by the Department Consumer Affairs] can justify their usage of the term 'herbal'. Over 90 per cent of their composition is the same as that of regular toothpastes and contain about 2.5 per cent or slightly more herbal elements," the document states.
The document names several brands, including Colgate Herbal, Patanjali Dant Kant, Himalaya Complete Care, Babool Neem, Herbodent, Neem Active, Meswak, Dabur Red, Vicco Vajradanti, among others. These toothpastes were sent to an NABL-certifiedlab, where their compositions were tested.
Thus, consumers should keep in mind their sensitivity to various brands even when choosing herbal toothpastes.
