Work-life balance seems to a hot debate nowadays. Executives calling for longer hours and younger generations wanting a break from the hustle culture has made the conversation really dynamic.
In such an atmosphere, an image of a start-up executive working at his own wedding has stirred the pot. AI start-up Thoughtly co-founder and CEO, Torrey Leonard, in a post on social networking platform LinkedIn, shared a photograph showing his fellow co-founder Casey Mackrell working on his laptop during the wedding celebration.
Explaining the post, Leonard said, “My co-founder Casey has built a reputation for himself as “the guy who sits on his laptop in bars” from SF to NYC Last week Thoughtly brought on a customer that needed to launch within 2 weeks. He just so happened to be getting married within that 2 week window…So, here he is wrapping up a pull request. At his own wedding. Congrats Casey– now please, go take some time off.”
The post triggered major reactions from Netizens. While Leonard did clarify in comments that Mackrell returned to the celebrations 2 seconds later, social media was not impressed with the explanation.
One of the users commented, “This isn’t the flex you think it is.”, while others said the post was extremely embarrassing for the founders and their company. Users called out the lack of work-life balance in the workplace and questioned if such practices should be admired or looked on as a breach of personal boundaries.
Another user called out the post as tone deaf and said, “Utterly bizarre to post this. This is nothing to brag about. This guy is his laptop, working at his own wedding and you're congratulating him?” Some individuals even questioned Mackrell's committment to his own wedding. One user noted, "No one deserves to marry such a person who takes them for granted. Working on wedding night ? Is this for real?"
