New Delhi: Sensex and Nifty, the two key equity benchmarks, on Thursday plunged sharply to 52,701, down 1,506 points, while the NSE Nifty was trading at 15,790, down 450 points amid volatility and global sell-off across sectors.

The broader markets also held steep losses. The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices declined up to 2.5 per cent.

All sectors were in the red, with IT being the worst hit. The Nifty IT index sank 4.8 per cent. Metals, Media and PSB indices on the Nifty cracked 3 per cent each.

On the BSE platform, except ITC and Dr Reddy's Lab, the other constituents were in the negative zone. Wipro was the top loser, down 6.38 per cent, followed by Tech M, Infosys, HCL Tech, and TCS.
