Last December, when the Mananthavady eparchy of the Syrian Christian Church — encompassing Wayanad — announced its decision to advance the midnight mass on Christmas Eve, it marked a departure from a decades-old tradition. The faithful in the diocese — consisting mostly of early settlers from Central Travancore — had been reeling under a spate of attacks from predators leading up to it. A month and a half later, three tragic deaths in a matter of three weeks to rogue
