Meet the BYD Seagull and it is the smallest car that they offer with a range of more than 300km claimed. The Seagull would be sold in some RHD markets where it could be also known as Dolphin Surf. It would be the most affordable EV from BYD where it undercuts the Dolphin which is more expensive. The battery pack options for the Seagull in China include 30kWh or 38kWh battery packs while there would be two motor choices as well.
In China, it costs under Rs 10 lakh which means for India this could be an interesting option even if priced more since there is a clear lack of affordable EVs although the options are growing. Weighing above 1200 kg, the BYD Seagull measures less than 4m but the interiors are premium with some of the typical BYD design cues. Compared to Dolphin it is smaller but could work in a cost sensitive market like ours.
The question is whether BYD wants to enter this segment in India and right now, no is the answer we guess since the focus is on premium products and not on volume ones but this car does make excellent sense for our markets given the looks plus the quality interiors along with the ample range on offer. If coming to India, it can rival the likes of the Tata Tiago EV and the Citroen eC3 which are the only four door hatchback EVs right now.
