If you are waiting for a Rs 20 lakh Tesla as your next car then it would have to wait some years as of now, what we can expect is that Tesla sets shop in India with a few of its CBU products namely the Model 3 and Y. These could be priced at Rs 60 lakh or it can be slightly lower if duties are slashed further.

The cheapest Model 3 is still a luxury car that competes as a premium sedan and won't be a 20 lakh Tesla hence, expect the Model Y and 3 to be the backbone of Tesla sales with its likely India debut next year with importing cars.

The bigger highlight is the expectation of made in India Tesla cars which could be coming around 2026 and that could meet the Rs 20 lakh ballpark with heavy localisation and the entire ecosystem in place to reduce costs.

That will be taking a long time and that model could be the Tesla Model 2 which would be the more affordable Tesla below the Model 3 with lower equipment levels.

To make Tesla's in India, the minimum investment required would be USD 2 billion but CEO Elon Musk has been previously vocal about investing in our country and of course, launching its cars here. In order to boost demand for EVs, the Government is also said to be looking at lowering the taxes as compared to petrol imported cars for carmakers to introduce more EVs and test waters before establishing a plant here. More details are expected at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit regarding Tesla's plans but they are indeed inching closer to finally making a presence in one of the fastest growing automotive markets in the world.
