New Delhi: India had to wait for a long time for Tesla to make its debut. Now, the wait seems to be over as four models of Tesla cars have been given a green signal by the authorities.

The Vahan Sewa Portal of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways mentions that four Tesla models have been certified to run on Indian roads.

Elon Musk-controlled Tesla is the world's most popular Electric Vehicle (EV) manufacturing company.

Four Tesla Models Soon To Be Launched

As Tesla got the green signal for four models to run on Indian roads, the name of the models approved has not been made official yet. As per media reports, it is expected that Model 3 and Model Y variants may be launched in India. These four models of Tesla are in line with the safety and emission requirements of the Indian auto market.

The California-based company has started hiring employees for senior executive posts for the launch of the EV.

Tesla India Launch

Tesla CEO Elon Musk had indicated setting up a factory in India. He had earlier said that Tesla cars can be launched in India sometime in 2021. He, however, informed that Tesla will be imported and sold in India initially. He recently tweeted that India has the highest import duty compared to any other country in the world, raising questions on the initial launch of the EV.

Meanwhile, the Centre has emphasized on promotng local development and manufacturing of electric vehicles to reduce pollution and dependence on oil imports.

This has led the government to formulate a production-linked incentive scheme for advanced chemical cell batteries to reduce the cost of electric vehicles and develop India as a hub for new technology products.
