Hot hatchbacks are suddenly the talk of the town with Tata Motors getting back into this space after the Tiago JTP was canned. Now, the Altroz Racer brings in more power with the engine of the Nexon plus more features as well. How does that compare with its chief rival, the Hyundai i20 N Line along with a wild card entry being the Maruti Fronx coupe style SUV? Let us take a look.
Design wise all three are great looking cars in the first place with the Altrox Racer having a sportier look dual tone colour scheme with stripes on the hood along plus all the details at the top half being blackened in contrast to the orange bits. There are black alloys too. The i20 N Line also has a sportier hot hatch look with the N Line inspired chin plus the sportier elements along with exhausts poking out. Both cars look aggressive here. The Fronx is a coupe style SUV with a sloping rear styling but also has a wide stance while obviously having bigger ground clearance than the other two.
Both the i20 and Altroz get the sportier treatment on the inside with contrast stitching and a black look. The N Line gets metal pedals and a sportier steering when compared to the regular i20 while the Altroz puts the focus on features. While both cars have a 10.25-inch screen plus a digital cluster, the Altroz brings in a 360 degree camera, ventilated seats and a voice assisted sunroof plus a premium audio system. The i20 N Line has an electric sunroof and a Bose audio too.
The Fronx has a 9inch touchscreen while getting a heads up display and a 360 degree camera but missing sporty pedals or a sunroof. All three get top notch safety features though with 6 airbags standard for the i20 N Line and Altroz Racer.
Power figures are important here with the Altroz Racer having a 1.2l turbo petrol with 120bhp and 170Nm along with a sole 6-speed manual. The i20 N Line also comes with a manual while having a 1.0l turbo petrol with 120hp and 172Nm. However, the i20 N Line also comes with a 7-speed DCT with paddle shifters. The Fronx has a 1.0l turbo petrol with 100 bhp and 147Nm. Gearbox options include a standard 5-speed manual and an optional 6-speed torque converter automatic with paddle shifters.
The Altroz Racer comes in three trims with the prices hovering from Rs 9.49 lakh to Rs 10.99 lakh. The i20 N Line prices are 10 lakh to Rs 11.30 lakh. The Fronx Turbo meanwhile comes between Rs 9.7 and Rs 13 lakh. The Fronx is an SUV here with more space, ground clearance while the other two are proper performance oriented hot hatchbacks. The Altroz Racer has loads of features and the performance while the i20 N Line has a DCT too. Hence, choose according to your needs and wants.
