Recently a pick-up version of the Scorpio N was spotted and that also brought back the limelight whether pick-ups make sense for India. Pick-up trucks are hugely popular across certain markets in Asia and of course the US but in India, there are only two options while the Toyota Hilux and the Isuzu V-Cross do have a very small niche to themselves. Mahindra did show a pick-up truck concept in South Africa last year while now we can see the car being tested in India.
Most likely this prototype is also for testing for a launch outside India since the pick-up truck segment is too small in volumes. While a Hilux-like tough pick-up truck would be appealing, in India, the launch will not happen as most likely it is for a market like South Africa or Australia where pick-ups are popular. The Global Pik Up that we are talking about is a butch looking version and has some considerable differences between the Scorpio N. The engine for this pick-up would be the same diesel while 4x4 would be standard.
There would be single and double cab options too. As a niche segment, a tough pick-up based on the Scorpio N would be a nice product for India but again volumes would be too low as pick-ups are not practical for our market. That said, the Scorpio brand will certainly help increase this segment if it comes.
