The E-Class is the best selling Mercedes-Benz in India and has been so for a while plus it is also their first model which was introduced way back in 1994! The E-Class in its present avatar was a big hit because it came in a long wheelbase form, which others have followed. Now, Mercedes-Benz has brought in the new generation model which is even longer, has more technology and space. Here is our first look.
First up is the styling as here the E-Class looks familiar at first glance but there are changes. To us, it looks more elegant now and has a more flowing stance with the rear door not looking too long. It is longer now though with a length of 5092mm which is 14mm more while the wheelbase is further stretched by 15mm at 3094mm. The front-end has new headlamps and a large new logo along with a tri-pattern grille similar to other Mercs. Then you look at the new S-Class style flush door handles and new 3D tail-lamps. It looks as big as an S-Class now and has plenty of presence.
However, the real deal is on the inside. Open the larger doors and the cabin is a tech fest with lots of screens. While this may seem intimidating, it does appeal to the tech lover! There is a passenger touchscreen now at 12.3inch along with a 14.4 inch touchscreen. Quality is what you expect from a Mercedes but there is a bigger wow factor now. That said, the touchscreen is now home to more controls as is the case these days. The touchscreen has a lovely display and quality is top notch.
However, some of the functions are now inside a touchscreen including climate control which is tricky! The same goes for the haptic feedback steering buttons. However, you can customise the car yourself and also use the voice assistant. Which brings us to the tech on offer which is massive. There is AI onboard and each passenger can customise the car to his/her preferences. AI learns about your car usage and pushes the icons that you use regularly at the top or even it learns how you customise the car functions. There are separate driver profiles and a lot more personalization!
Then there is also a selfie camera and you can take meetings too! On-board apps, streaming and what not means that the E-Class is now a mobile boardroom. However, the Bade Saheb will be at the back and here it is plush. There is plenty of legroom to lounge about and there are more gadgets. Electric thigh support adjustment, sunblinds and wireless charger to name a few. Then there is a separate two zone climate control at the rear, soft cushions and a 17-speaker 4D Burmester audio system to listen to where there are speakers inside the seats!
The new E-Class always gets ambient lighting but there is now active ambient lighting which also warns you if there is a car coming and you are about to get out of the car. Speaking of which, the E-Class also gets soft-close doors. Engine options include four cylinder petrol and diesel with a 48V mild hybrid tech on offer with a 9-speed automatic.
With all of this tech, you expect prices to go up and we can expect it to be around Rs 80-83 lakh, which is more expensive but justified owing to the increased luxury levels on offer.
