The massive GLS has been one of the best selling SUVs in its class and now it has received a big update. As the name says, it is the “S-Class” of SUVs and hence, a lot of these changes are aimed at increasing the luxury and comfort of this car.

You can easily identify this as the new GLS thanks to the new look front with a G-Wagen inspired grille which adds to the imposing presence. The bumper, DRLs and the lighting signature is also new. The rear also gets new taillights.

Bigger changes are on the inside with regards to the technology on offer. First of all there is a new look steering wheel which looks better than the earlier one while the touchscreen gets the latest MBUX infotainment system with fingerprint sensor. Like all of the modern Mercs, there are added off-road screens including a transparent bonnet.

Look closer and you will spot Maybach trim elements being added here which we think make a big difference in terms of the luxury appeal.

The features list includes ADAS with active stop and go, active seat ventilation and heating, a superb 13 speaker Burmester audio system with Dolby Atmos and more.

The all important rear seat is where most owners would sit and here there is a big upgrade with rear entrainment screens, MBUX tablet and you can electrically move the front passenger seat to bring in more space.

The seats are quite comfortable if not quite as plush as an S- Class while there are electrically operated sun blinds too. The third row is decent but considering the size it's not very spacious however, it's suitable for short journeys.

To drive, there is the usual line-up of diesel and petrol with mild hybrid systems now added along with air suspension of course. Here, the GLS makes a case as a luxury’s SUV since the ride and the quietness helped by laminated glass is pretty much the new class benchmark. It is refined and there is barely any tyre noise or engine noise with the way the GLS goes about its business. It is focused on comfort and isn’t worried about sportiness. It does feel a bit big around the city though and parking isn’t easy but most owners won’t care about that since their chauffeurs will worry about all this.

The new GLS is a much more competent package with new equipment levels and its excellent comfort. It is a combination of a limousine with SUV practicality.

What we like: Comfort, presence, quality, features, refinement

What we do not: Handful for city use
