The GLA is a compact luxury SUV from Mercedes-Benz and has been around for 10 years in India. In its latest generation avatar it has grown up but that also includes its stiff competition. Now, it is time for a facelift and the new GLA has been given a refreshed look plus more features. There are two trim levels and the one we have here is the AMG Line which looks more distinctive with the body coloured bumper plus the extended design which is different from the Progressive line. The AMG Line also has a different grille with a diamond like pattern while there are new headlamps too with new DRLs. More than anything, the new Spectral Blue shade steals the show here along with those 19-inch alloys. While the GLA is compact, these changes make it sportier.

On the inside, the AMG Line gets an all black look and has a different steering wheel design similar to the more expensive AMGs. Look around and there is a new carbon trim and a redesigned centre console too. Other additions include the latest MBUX infotainment system, 3D Maps, wireless smartphone connectivity, a digital key and you can even play games like Sudoku now.

There is also a clear 360 degree camera now plus driver assistance features like adaptive high beam assist, Active Park Assist, 7 airbags plus the off-road package for the GLA 220d 4MATIC with specific off-road screens etc. It continues to get two sunroofs but the rear doors are small and space at the back is a bit tight too.

There continues to be the GLA 200 and the GLA 220d 4MATIC with the diesel being punchy in its power delivery along with being much more powerful than rivals. It feels quick and the power delivery is strong with the 8-speed auto being responsive. Along with the performance, even the mileage is an impressive 18 kmpl plus- diesels still make sense.

Despite 19-inch wheels, the ride is not stiff and it does way better off-road than its rivals plus the ground clearance is enough. It is only the sharpest of the potholes that filter too. The outgoing GLA was priced from Rs 48-53 lakh and with these updates, the GLA is now more desirable and a better value product. For a compact luxury SUV being self driven, the GLA in AMG trim especially could be an interesting buy being the entry into luxury car ownership.
