New Delhi: Mercedes-Benz has announced its plans for 2022 and it includes starting local production of its electric car- EQS for India. This is a big move towards electric cars in general in the luxury space as till now electric luxury cars have been launched via the CBU import route.

The EQS being locally produced will mean more competitive pricing and a boost for electric cars in general. As the name states, the EQS is very much the flagship Mercedes electric sedan being the S-class of its electric cars hence the 'S' letter in the name.

The EQS however is not the current S-Class being electric as it is an entirely new car. The EQS is the first model to be based on the modular architecture for luxury and executive-class electric vehicles for Mercedes along with the first all-electric luxury saloon from Mercedes-EQ. With ranges up to 770 kilometres (WLTP) and an output of up to 385 kW, the EQS would be the EV with the longest range in India when launched.

The car also gets batteries with significantly higher energy density along with features such as its MBUX Hyperscreen- three screens joined into one plus more.

Other new launches being confirmed is the Maybach S-Class which is the most luxurious version of the S-Class while adding to the Maybach brand which currently has the GLS SUV. Of course many AMG performance models plus the launch of the new generation C-Class is also something which we can expect this year.

Mercedes-Benz revealed its sales figures for 2021 where it continued to maintain its lead for the 7th year in a row with total sales of 11,242 units- up from 7893 units in 2020; +42.5%.

Its various volume driven products like the New A-Class Limousine, E-Class LWB, and S-Class luxury sedans and the New GLA, GLC, GLE and GLS SUVs continue to be the most popular. Currently, the E-Class is their best selling car while the GLC is their best selling SUV.
