New Delhi: Finally, India's largest carmaker is jumping on the EV bandwagon with the news of officially confirming its first EV SUV to be shown at the Auto Expo. That said, it will be a concept version with the full production version being due in 2025. The car and the platform are shared with Toyota while the range is set to be in the region of 400-500km being a Nexon EV rival of sorts.

There would be two battery pack options and the styling would be futuristic but also keep in line with the aggressive styling theme of the Grand Vitara. The key to the new EV SUV from Maruti Suzuki would be localisation which would reflect in its pricing. Based on a new platform, we expect a flat floor and a spacious cabin while size-wise, it would be more like the MG ZS rather than an SUV-4m SUV.

The feature list is expected to also be expansive along with the lines of the fully loaded Grand Vitara with a panoramic glass roof, ventilated seats, climate control and more. With a longer wheelbase, expect the new SUV to be the roomiest Maruti on sale.

The YY8 SUV would be manufactured at their Gujarat plant and would also be earmarked for exports too. This would be the first Maruti EV SUV and a lot different to the Wagon R electric which was earlier destined to be a study on electric cars but its price along with its small size means Maruti would not have the scale or the numbers.

With a bigger SUV with attractive styling, things have been turned and it could be priced around the same ballpark as the Grand Vitara hybrid. At the 2023 Auto Expo, we would be seeing the concept version with more extravagant styling which would be toned down for the actual production car.
