We recently spent a few days with the Mahindra Thar Roxx diesel RWD version while doing a combination of highway and city driving. The Thar Roxx in 4x2 guise makes 152 bhp and 330Nm while the 4x4 is more powerful. In terms of gearbox options you have a standard 6-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed torque converter automatic.

We drove the 4x2 diesel automatic, one of the most popular configurations in the Thar Roxx range. In terms of mileage the Thar Roxx has an official claimed efficiency figure of 15.2 kmpl. In our real world city usage the figure was 10 kmpl in the city with moderate to aggressive throttle inputs along with bumper to bumper traffic.

Highway use and a light throttle inputs increased that figure to 12kmpl. The figures are similar to the Thar 3 door while the 5-door is not too thirsty over its smaller sibling. The Thar Roxx has a 57 litre fuel tank which should translate to a decent amount of range. The diesel Roxx overall is more efficient than the petrol version of course but the automatic does deliver decent efficiency compared to other SUVs too despite its shape or size or the weight.

We recommend the diesel automatic over the manual thanks to the convenience plus the efficiency is also not affected in the automatic diesel vs the manual diesel. The 4x2 is a bit more efficient over the 4x4 Thar Roxx as well. Hence mileage wise the Thar Roxx diesel 4x2 is the best bet here if you do long trips or have a running which justifies a diesel since the efficiency is higher than in the petrol.
