2020 saw major disruption in the fiercely competitive subcompact SUV segment. Of course, it is clear that this type of car is what the Indian buyer wants as when upgrading from a hatchback or a sedan, a subcompact SUV is just the perfect solution. However, the Magnite and the Sonet have attempted to change the goalposts at both the price points with Sonet increasing the premium quotient while Magnite making an SUV much more attainable. The Urban Cruiser from Toyota comes in between but might be the jack of all trades. Here is a short comparison of the three newest compact SUVs. Looks
No one wants a boring looking car anymore and there are no excuses for designing a bad looking car anymore too. Fortunately, all three here cut a sharp stance. The Sonet is the most radical and also the one which is bursting with a futuristic vibe. The pumped-up looks and the muscle plus that grille with the sharply styled headlamps along with the detailing in them means that it looks like a premium car. It is also the widest while sharing the same length as the Toyota. The Nissan is slightly smaller but holds its own in terms of looks with a nice big grille along with well-proportioned styling. It is good looking overall with a youthful feel. The Urban Cruiser is a Maruti Brezza in Toyota clothes. However, it has the more square SUV like look with its more boxy styling, which might appeal to some. Interior, quality and features
Anyone paying near Rs 10 lakh or more wants a well-packed interior with quality and enough features to impress the family and friends. Here the Sonet scores the most. The interiors do feel like they are knocking on the doors of a midsize SUV and as much as beating some bigger SUVs for quality. The interior is nearly the same in quality as the Seltos with the same knurled buttons. The huge touchscreen is more like a TV while it has the best screen res and use-ability. Look elsewhere and the Sonet is filled to the brim with the kit. You have everything from an air purifier to wireless charging, Bose audio, sunroof, connected tech plus more. The other two cannot match it but interestingly the Magnite being cheaper has more kit than the Urban Cruiser. The Toyota seems to pack in the essentials but is clearly lacking some tech and features which one expects these days. The Magnite while not quite matching the Sonet still has a funky all-digital cluster, rear ac vents, wireless charger, puddle lamps and an air purifier. Space They may be called subcompact SUVs but those who buy them will use the space on offer to the fullest hence this area is very important. Here the Urban Cruiser claws it back with a wide and spacious rear seat. It has the best legroom and also the airiest cabin with the ability to sit three passengers easily. The Magnite and Sonet come in together while the Magnite has a slight advantage for the legroom with the wide rear seat while the Sonet lacks the sense of space that the other two have and is best used as a four-seater. The Sonet has a massive boot though and scores over others here. Driving
