New Delhi: Hyundai has just launched the new Tucson and with this SUV, they are moving to a more premium space and also would be retailing via its new Signature outlets. The new Tucson is a completely new generation model and would be the flagship Hyundai SUV so a lot has been packed in along with being positioned in the competitive Rs 20-30 lakh premium SUV space. We recently spent some time with the SUV to check out its space, features and even experience its ADAS feature. Take a look at 7 things we noticed.

1. It looks big and indeed looks bigger than its many direct rivals with the long wheelbase version being on sale in India despite being a 5-seater. The length of 4630mm confirms its size plus the new Hyundai design language is very aggressive when compared to the earlier Tucson. It is sportier and the massive grille at the front which includes the DRLs which remain hidden when not lit is another unique feature. The connecting LED lamps and the massive creases at the side plus the lack of a rear wiper being visible makes this one of the best looking SUVs if more towards the sporty side.

2. All that space translates to a spacious rear seat which we think will make it appealing to chauffeur driven owners. It is not a captain seat lay-out but a bench seat; however, the space in terms of legroom/headroom is very impressive. Further on you can recline the rear seat quite a bit and even move the front passenger seat electronically from the rear.

3 We spent some time in the interior where immediately, a sense of quality which is also expected from a premium SUV, can be seen. Some details like the wide aircon vents which meet the lines on the door pads along with minimalistic detailing are nice. It does not get too many buttons while a floating digital instrument cluster and a different four-spoke steering wheel are other highlights. The door pads are soft touch too.

4. The centre screen is a 10.25-inch unit in a gloss black panel while below there are touch based buttons. Storage is well looked at while the India version gets a conventional gear lever. The gloss black panel is prone to scratches but the touchscreen functionality is top class.

5. The features list being the flagship Hyundai is naturally stuffed with equipment. So you get the basics of the segment being a massive panoramic sunroof, dual zone climate control, connected car tech and more. But then there are dual powered seats with heating and cooling on offer, 64 color ambient lighting, a multi air mode which means air flow is from multiple vens, 8-speaker BOSE audio system, sounds of nature feature which plays soothing music, Alexa/Google Voice assistant, OTA updates, multi language for the infotainment system and more.

6. Perhaps more than anything, it's the suite of ADAS level 2 features that makes the Tucson stand out with a whole lot of features going beyond the usual ones. We experienced it from the passenger seat where the SmartSense uses the 360 degree camera plus the radars to increase the safety. There are in total 19 ADAS features and it first started off with the Smart Cruise function where the Tucson will maintain a preset distance with the car in front and at a certain speed. The Tucson maintained a consistent gap all around plus also slowed down when the car in the front slowed down.

We then experienced the Lane Keep and Lane Departure with the Lane Keep function working over 60kmph and basically correcting the steering itself with no need to have hands on the steering- though it is recommended that one you should hands on the steering. That system again worked flawlessly on clearly marked roads. Plus like on the Alcazar there is a Blind spot view monitor which lets you see the view on either side when using the indicator. The image is clear and does help.

Of course there is also the emergency brake system where the car applies the brakes if it senses a collision before giving a warning or even looking out for vehicles when reversing or even applying the brakes if required.

7. The Tucson in terms of engine options gets a 2.0l petrol which makes 156ps/192 Nm which has a 6-speed auto. There is also a diesel which is the more powerful engine which gets 186ps/416Nm along with an 8-speed auto. There is no manual but the diesel gets an AWD system with terrain modes (Snow/Mud/Sand).

Overall, the new Tucson at first glance scores in terms of size, space, design and features but to us the ADAS functions and how it is easy to access along with the functionality is what sets it apart. If priced right, the Tucson can easily be the popular option within this price bracket along with upping the class standard.
