Hyundai is all set to launch its first mass market electric car in the form of the Creta electric which enters the fiercely competitive compact EV space above 4m. The Creta electric would be launched in a few days time and we spoke to Tarun Garg, COO, Hyundai Motor India to know more. Creta has sold over 1.1 million since its launch and Garg said that this is the right time to bring in the electric avatar of the Creta.

While India is in the early stage of electrification, bringing in an electric SUV with the Creta moniker would expand the segment. Key attributes that Garg mentioned included the charging infrastructure that comes with the Creta with an 11Kw AC charger as well as the DC fast charger along with a range of 473km.

He also mentioned that the electric segment can grow further especially with the Government supporting electrification too while a brand name like Creta is what the segment needed. Also with states supporting electric cars and also customers interested in EVs, there is also a scope for more growth.

Garg stated that the EV buyer is more tech savvy but importantly is looking for reliability too along with the buyer's confidence. As far as charging infrastructure is concerned, Hyundai is also concentrating on more DC chargers along with AC chargers to electrify highways. The charging app for the Creta electric will also have access to 10,000 plus chargers while payment through in-car for more than a 1000 chargers.

Hyundai till now has launched EVs at the premium end especially with the Ioniq 5 but the Creta electric is their first offering which will be looking at the volume space also since the Creta is their overall best selling car.
