New Delhi: We recently had a chance to check out the IONIQ 5 SUV at the new Hyundai India HQ and the car is on display there with no word on a possible launch.

However, should Hyundai launch this car in India? The IONIQ 5 is a midsize EV, the only SUV that is built on the new BEV platform. A new platform enables it to have different proportions since electric cars have fewer components and can have long wheelbases under a smaller exterior.

Though the Ioniq is big, the interiors seem even more spacious. In terms of design, the Ioniq 5 is very attractive and unlike anything else that we have seen wearing a Hyundai badge. It seems more like a large crossover with design details like the square-shaped tail-lamps, the various cuts at the front bumper or the different wheels.

The interior is also different with a moveable center console, flat floor, electronically adjustable front seats plus eco-based materials used in the design.

Elsewhere there is a 12-inch touchscreen and a 12-inch display for the driver too. Worldwide, the Ioniq 5 comes with either a 58 kWh or 72.6 kWh motor while the range is similar to large luxury EVs with 470-480 km as per WLTP.

The Ioniq 5 competes with Tesla Model Y worldwide and other EVs with a price tag starting at Rs 37 lakh in global markets. Currently, the EV is sold out in many places with strong demand. If there is a reduction in duties for importing EVs, we can see cars like these getting launched in our market.

EVs are expensive but the design of this car looks unique while the range is also ample. Hyundai can look at this to position it above the Kona EV. We had a look and certainly warmed up to that idea, how about you?
