This year has seen the launch of the Maruti Suzuki Fronx and it has already got a strong start while a majority of the sales are for the 1.2 petrol variant. There is also a Fronx with the turbo petrol but the 1.2l Fronx has found a sweet spot in terms of looks plus the pricing. Now, Hyundai is also entering the small SUV space with a new SUV below the Venue. The Exter fits into a micro SUV category while coming with a 1.2 petrol also. Here is a quick spec comparo of the Fronx and Exter.
While they both may not seem like traditional rivals, the Fronx and Exter both get a 1.2l petrol along with a manual gearbox plus an AMT. The Fronx of course has also a turbo petrol which is more expensive but we are looking at the 1.2 petrol being the more popular version. Styling wise the Fronx looks longer and has a sportier look while the Exter has a more upright SUV like styling. Both get all of the usual SUV styling elements but have a different styling theme altogether. In terms of features, both also offer six airbags, a large touchscreen, connected car tech while the Fronx offers a 360 degree camera while the Exter gets a standard rear camera although it gets a sunroof plus a dashcam. Both cars claim to offer high levels of space comparable to a premium hatchback while both SUVs are also based on hatchbacks too.
If we talk about pricing, the Fronx is priced from Rs 7.4 lakh while the top-end 1.2l petrol Fronx is priced at Rs 9.3 lakh. The Exter would also be expected to be priced along with that price bracket although the Exter will most likely have a lower entry level at around 6.2 lakh starting while the top-end would be below Rs 10 lakh also like the Fronx. In short, these two cars give you a choice to go for a feature loaded SUV within a budget of being below Rs 10 lakh ex-showroom. The Fronx is the sportier offering while the Exter is the more traditional SUV.
