First Review: Urban Cruiser Hyryder Toyota's Compact SUV Unveiled – Top 7 Things We Noticed

Toyota has revealed its new car for India, Urban Cruiser Hyryder SUV, becoming Toyota's entry ticket to the compact SUV space.

New Delhi: Toyota has revealed its most important new car for India with its Urban Cruiser Hyryder SUV. It is a compact SUV that focuses on hybrid performance plus features along with being Toyota's entry ticket to the compact SUV space.

We spent some time with the car and here are the top 7 things that we noticed.

• With a length of 4365mm and a width of 1795mm, the Hyryder is quite a good-looking SUV but to us is more of a crossover with a lower roof. That said we liked the double DRL lighting and the two part grille plus the LED headlamp. It also has a skid plate and a floating roof with dual tone colours. It does look premium and as big as a Seltos but lower than it.

• Interiors are easily the plushest that we have seen from a Toyota and also the soft touch leather inserts all around are similar to the Fortuner and Carry along with the buttons.

• The high features list stands out also with everything being added in from a panoramic sunroof to ventilated seats plus a heads-up display, climate control, connected car tech and a 360 degree view camera. It is one of the most feature-loaded cars now.

• The hybrid packaging has meant that boot space is a bit small and the whole cabin feels a bit tight. The rear seat is best for two passengers only with a central tunnel.


• AWD is a huge feature and something other SUVs don't have. AWD would be available on the manual 1.5l mild hybrid petrol and not the full hybrid. The mild hybrid 1.5 would be also available with a 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters.

• The attention would be on the hybrid though with a combined 113bhp power being more than the 1.5l standard petrol plus it would be able to drive in electric mode below certain speeds in city traffic. There is an e-drive transmission too. We expect a mileage of 26-28 kmpl for the hybrid.

• Pricing is crucial and high localisation will mean the starting price of the 1.5l petrol manual would be around 11 lakh but all eyes would be on the hybrid and for that, we expect a sub 20 lakh price tag.
