New Delhi: It is ironic that just when Toyota stopped bookings of the Innova Crysta diesel BYD has now started to sell the e6 MPV to private buyers. Earlier the e6 from BYD was available as a fleet option but now private buyers can get that too. While the Innova diesel bookings will resume, we could not resist putting it together with the e6 for a small comparison.

Which car is bigger?

Both are full-sized MPVs but the Innova is longer with a length of 4735mm while the e6 has a length of 4695mm. The e6 is wider though at 1810mm while the Innova comes in at 1830mm. Both have a long wheelbase with the Innova at 2750mm and the e6 at 2800mm. In design terms, the e6 is more of a pure MPV in terms of styling and keeps it simple. The Innova stands taller and has a hint of SUV-ness with the design while getting a lot of chrome too.

Which car is more spacious?

The BYD e6 has a huge amount of space at the rear and the flat floor further makes it a comfortable place to be. The seats themselves are very comfortable but surprisingly there is no rear armrest. The Innova rear seat is also hugely spacious and comfortable with captain seats along with a fold-out table. The BYD cabin gets more hard plastics while the Innova cabin is plusher the rotatable touchscreen is bigger than the one on the Innova. Both MPVs get features like a rear camera, climate control and more. The BYD screen also shows Google maps with the screen which rotates being a useful feature. The Innova was given an update last year with new features like smartphone connectivity and front parking sensors as well.

Which is more powerful?

The e6 has a 71.7kWh battery pack and a blade battery tech which makes for more efficient and safer batteries along with being more durable. Total power is 95hp and 180Nm but the figure which makes the e6 an attractive option is the 500plus km range that you get and in the real world, the range is also surprisingly close to this. The e6 also has regenerative braking and can be charged via DC fast charging or an AC fast charger. The faster AC charger enables the car to charge in 2 hours. To drive, the e6 is smooth and is tuned towards comfort while the EV silence is certainly impressive given it would be used to drive around passengers. It is also easy to drive and does not feel big from behind the wheel.

Innova diesel bookings may have been stopped but the 2.4-litre diesel continues to be the pick of the range with its torque and effortless performance. There is also a smooth but thirsty 2.7l petrol engine which you can still buy now. Compared to the e6, the Innova has heavier steering but has a more tough suspension and better ground clearance however the e6 is also refined along with a promise of cheaper running costs at under Rs 2 per km.

Which car is better value for money?

The BYD e6 has a handful of dealers across major cities and it is priced at Rs 29.15 lakh. The Innova on the other hand is priced between Rs 17.8 lakh to Rs 26.5 lakh. The BYD offers you cheaper running costs, a more environmentally friendly MPV with a decent cabin and the quietness of an electric car. However, for private buyers, it has to compete with other cars like the Innova. The BYD might seem a bit expensive and also lack some features but it does end up being an appealing alternative due to the range and how cheap it is to run for those who do many inter-city or highway runs. The Innova has unmatched reliability, resale value, more dealers and is more suited to rough roads along with a better cabin. So while Innova will continue to pull buyers and maintain its loyal customer base, some buyers will also indeed get the e6 for being the only electric MPV.
