BMW has unveiled the all-new second-generation X2. In its first-generation, the BMW X2 set the desired tone for the ‘Sports Activity Coupe’ in the premium compact segment, it pushes the standards even further in its radical new avatar. While the first-gen X2 did look the part with its well-proportioned design and footprint as a neatly done compact crossover, the new second-generation BMW X2 now gets a fresh new ‘coupe’ design, with a silhouette that closely resembles the BMW X4, and in a stylish way. The new seond-gen BMW X2 grows in dimensions, is more aerodynamic, gets upgraded features, and also brings in the first-ever all-electric BMW iX2.

What’s New In The Second-Gen BMW X2?

Grown-Up Proportions

The new second-gen BMW X2 and iX2 share their underpinnings with the BMW X1 and iX1. The new X2 has grown-up compared to its predecessor, sitting on a 22 mm longer wheelbase. It is now 194 mm longer, 21 mm wider, and 64 mm taller than the outgoing model. The stretched proportions coupled with wider track also reflect on the inside of the new X2 with better cabin space and a larger trunk.

New Front And Rear Fascias

The design overhaul of the all-new BMW X2 also brings in new front and rear fascias alongside bolder creases and sharper body lines. The new design therapy centres itself around aerodynamics and presence. The new X2 gets a completely redesigned front and rear fascia in its second generation. The front face is now dominated by a larger and wider kidney grille that also features an optional ring of LED lights dubbed as the ‘Iconic Glow’.

The new grille also gets active cooling flaps which close and open automatically, when required. Also new in the second-gen BMW X2 are the new headlights which are nicely complemented by the vertical air intakes and redesigned front bumper, adding in just the right amount of sportiness and aggression into it.

At the rear, the new BMW X2 gets sleeker tail lamps with ‘arrow’ shaped LEDs. The broader hip at the rear couples seamlessly with the wider stance and redesigned rear bumper as well as the lip-spoiler for an aggressive rear profile. At the side, the bolder shoulder lines sync well with the larger wheel arches and the sloping roofline for a youthful and sportier stance.

New Cabin Layout With More Passenger Room And Cargo Space

On the inside, the new second-gen BMW X2 gets a fresh layout which is identical to the recently updated BMW X1. The cabin is dominated by a large single-piece ‘curved’ touchscreen which houses two individual screens: a 10.25-inch digital drivers display and a 10.7-inch infotainment screen.

The two-tone interior theme with silver accents on the dashboard and the grey-black colour scheme on the seats as door-trims look fresh and upscale. At the same time the horizontal air vent across the dash and the minimalistic centre-console further accentuate the simplistic yet premium aura inside the cabin.

Besides being more plush, the new X2 also feels more spacious on the inside, courtesy of its enhanced proportions and a larger panoramic sunroof. The latter stance now opens up more headroom for the passengers inside, and the legroom is also more generous than its predecessor. The new X2 also unlocks a larger cargo capacity ranging from 560 litres to 1,470 litres at max with the rear seats folded.

Upgraded Features

The new second-gen BMW X2 gets a slurry of BMW’s latest car tech. At the centre of its feature upgrade rests the new BMW 9 Operating System that brings in a healthy pack of driver assistance features like steering and lane control assistant, active cruise control, exit warning, front collision warning, parking assistant, and others. The new infotainment also features the 'BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant' that allows users to interact with the car with voice commands. Besides offering a highly customizable interface the new BMW operating system also ropes in the BMW Digital Premium in the new X2 which paves way for streaming a variety of apps for music streaming, video streaming, news or gaming, through the subscription mode.

Furthermore, the cloud-basd BMW Maps in the new X2 can also be paired with the 'Augmented View Function' as an option. Some of the other highlight features available with the new second-gen BMW X2 include the BMW Digital Key Plus, the BMW ID functionality, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, Active Cruise Control, Active Navigation, BMW Head-Up Display, Harman Kardon Sound System, and others.

The First-Ever BMW iX2

Perhaps the most interesting side of the new second-gen BMW X2 is its all-electric variant, the BMW iX2. The new BMW iX2 gets two electric motors: one at both the axles, backed by a 64.7 kWh battery pack, good enough for a maximum power output of 313 hp. Cushioned by the enhanced underbody aero tweaks, the iX2 promises a WLTP-certified range of 450 km. However since the iX2 shares its underpinnings with the iX1, it gets a slower charging rate which has a maximum capping of 130kW on DC connections. That’s one area where the Korean siblings: the Kia EV6, and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 fare better.

Thankfully, with the revised software, the battery pack in the BMW iX2 is able to charge itself at full speed even from 50 percent. The iX2 also gets BMW’s familiar regenerative braking technology with active functionality, which adjusts the braking force as per traffic conditions. The regenerative braking in the iX2 is also able to supply a power of up to 120kW to the battery pack while braking. Besides re-improvised efficiency and charging capabilities, the BMW iX2 can sprint from 0-100 kmph in just 5.6 seconds. While BMW will be launching the iX2 in the iX2 xDrive30 guise, another all-electric iX2 is also slated to join the line-up later.

Revised Powertrains

At the bottom of the regular petrol-powered line-up of the new second-gen BMW X2 would sit the X2 sDrive20i which would pair up a 1.5-litre engine with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, churning out a total output of 170 hp. However, there will also be a powerful xDrive35i moniker for spirited drivers.

The new X2 m35i drive will pack a 2.0-litre turbocharged pot pushing out 300 hp in the European markets and 317 hp in the US. Some markets will also get the diesel-powered X2 sDrive18d packing a 2.0-liter inline-four diesel engine making 150 hp. All the gasoline-powered models of the new BMW X2 will be paired with a 'Seven-speed Steptronic transmission' with dual clutch

New Second-Gen BMW X2 Launch

Although BMW has pulled the covers off the new second-generation BMW X2, the German auto major’s new compact 'SAC' is slated for a global launch in March 2024, as per the official release. The new premium compact Sports Activity Coupe from BMW is likely to be launched first in the US and some selected markets in Asia and Europe. However, BMW is yet to bring the X2 to India, and it’s unclear as of now whether the new second-gen BMW X2 and the iX2 will make it to Indian shores.
