MG has unveiled its premium electric hatchback 4 in India and it could be an important launch for our market being positioned along with the MG ZS. The 4 EV is based on the MSP platform from SAIC and offers up to 350km range. There is a single rear-wheel-drive motor with battery capacities ranging from 51kWh to 64kWh. It is more than 4.2m long and has a rakish design while being a premium hatchback of sorts.

The 4 has a long wheelbase and the thin battery that it has further frees up more headroom along with having more overall space on the inside.

The overall dashboard design is completely different and unique with a small digital instrument cluster and a floating touchscreen.

The centre console has a clean design with minimal buttons and it looks quite futuristic along with a fuss-free interface.

The MG 4 has regenerative braking and also comes with ADAS features while the gear selector is similar to the MG ZS.

The MG4 could be an interesting launch for the Indian market since it would be the first premium hatchback available with an electric powertrain.

The challenge could be pricing and how MG will position it alongside its ZS EV.

To make sense as a volume product, the 4 would have to be assembled here and that would break the cost down but also be a more lifestyle-oriented EV choice along with the usual electric SUVs available at this price point.

The MG 4 is already on sale in other global markets and going at MG’s electric car launches with the Air being its next upcoming one, the 4 sits at the top as a flagship product with its styling being the main talking point along with the performance.
