Maruti Suzuki was hugely successful with its first sub-compact SUV, the Vitara Brezza. The first generation model came with a diesel engine too. However, later Maruti added petrol and removed diesel from its portfolio with the SUV still maintaining its popularity. However, with the segment getting crowded, a refresh was in order and this year, exactly that happened as the all-new Brezza came in armed with a raft of changes

We liked the evolutionary styling first of all which makes it look bigger than its rivals while the thick cladding all around is also a nice touch. The slimmer headlamps and tail-lamps further add to the sportier look. The Brezza impressed us more on the inside though with a massively overhauled interior being equipped with a lot more features now. Some of them are very useful like the heads-up display which adds a safety feature as one need not look down at the instrument cluster for basic information. Then the Brezza also gets connected to car technology, a sunroof, and a 360-degree view camera. Safety-wise, crucially the new Brezza fares better now with six airbags, ESC while build quality is tougher too.

One of the other elements which clinched this win for Maruti was the sense of space and comfort that the Brezza has. It offers more space and feels bigger than other SUVs in the sub-compact class with an airier cabin mixed with a wider seat than rivals.

While it lacks a turbo petrol motor, the larger capacity 1.5l petrol unit makes up for that up and so does the smooth 6-speed torque converter automatic while you can get the 5-speed manual too. The improved driving characteristics, tough suspension and the light controls also impressed. Like any Maruti Suzuki, the new Brezza is also efficient with a claimed mileage of upto 20.15 km/l.

Hence, for its space, features, and efficient yet smooth engine, the new Brezza is our Sub Compact SUV of the year.
