The new 5 Series is here and after a brief drive, it is indeed a big step up from the old 5 Series in terms of the factors that matter for the buyer in this class. Its rival, the E-Class with LWB has been a huge hit and customers sit at the back hence, space is very important as well as comfort.

Our very short drive experience consisted of a straight road where we got to drive it while later also being chauffeured in it. The new 5 Series LWB is huge and long with a length of 5,175mm while making it nearly as long as the last gen 7 Series! Compared to the older 5 Series it seems like it has gone to a different segment while looking more aggressive rather than sporty.

The interior is also excellent in terms of quality while again looking more like a 7 Series with the twin screens along with the interaction bar (a thin strip running across the car). Elsewhere, the new 5 Series also gets crystal elements. Thumb the start button and the engine quietly comes to life.

We drove the petrol 530 Li which would be the best seller and it is calm along with being relaxing. To drive, the new 5 Series LWB feels big but comfortable while suspension is much softer along with the smaller 18-inch wheels being perfect for our roads in terms of ride comfort. The new 5 Series is a lot more comfortable than the earlier version but it is also more softer too.

There is no air suspension but the ground clearance has been worked on which poses no problems. Of course, we need to drive it more to test that. With the Sport mode, throttle response becomes better and yes, it is quick while having more agility than what its size suggests.

Buyers who occasionally drive themselves would be happy but it is not as hardcore as the earlier 5 Series. That said, the huge space is also unlike the previous 5 Series. In LWB form, there are fantastic levels of space inside and the seats are soft while having loads of comfort.

The fixed glass panoramic sunroof also lets a lot of light in but we did miss window sun blinds or adjustability for the rear seat. The seats are also near 7 Series like in terms of cushioning and comfort but of course the massive TV and touchscreen isn't there- after all the 7 Series will get these to remain the flagship! We will know the pricing and the details by next month while bookings will start from 22nd July-two days before the launch. Overall, the new 5 Series is now a vastly better luxury car with more focus on ride comfort, space and luxury while we think it still remains a fun to drive car but not as hardcore as the earlier one.
