New Delhi: Hyundai is getting ready to launch its new generation Tucson in India and it would be its most premium SUV for our market. In other words, this new entrant is aimed at the Jeep Compass as a premium 5-seater SUV and along with that there is also the Tata Harrier. All these are premium 5-seater SUVs with high-end features so let us take a look as to how the Tucson competes in its new avatar. With a 2,755 mm wheelbase, the new Tucson is big and has the largest wheelbase in the long wheelbase form as that has been selected for our market. Both the Harrier and Compass are also not far behind in terms of wheelbase or the length with the wheelbase of Compass being 2,636mm and the Harrier at 2,741mm while the Tucson does get an advantage here. Design wise, the new Tucson has the latest design language for SUVs by Hyundai with a clever dark chrome grille which includes DRLs which remain a part of the grille when unlit. It does get a sporty look while the Jeep and Harrier have a more traditional SUV look along with an upright stance.

The interiors are where the game gets tougher with all three having premium cabins. The Jeep and the Hyundai have the biggest touch screen followed by the Tata. There are soft touch materials across the cabin and a premium which is expected with leather seats and more. In terms of features all three get a panoramic sunroof, premium audio system, connected car tech, ventilated seats etc. Where things get interesting is some of the small differences.

The Tucson is focused on the rear seat while at the front it gets both powered seats with being heated/cooled- the Compass gets powered seats too with cooling. The Harrier also has that. The difference is where the Tucson gets an additional button for rear passengers to electronically move the front passenger seat from the rear while the rear seat has its own recline mechanism. There is also dual zone climate control, multi air flow and ADAS level 2 which is there on the Tucson. Both the Tucson and the Compass get a 360 degree camera too.

A big difference is in the engine department where the Compass gets a 1.4l turbo petrol and a 2.0l diesel with manual/auto options while four wheel drive is available with the diesel auto 9-speed Compass. The Harrier gets a single 2.0l diesel with automatic and manual while AWD is not available yet. The Tucson gets a non turbo 2.0l petrol and a diesel with 6-speed and 8-speed automatic. There is also AWD on offer with terrain modes. The Harrier would be the most affordable here and it starts at Rs 14 lakh and goes upto Rs 21.90 lakh while the Compass is priced between Rs 18-29 lakh. The Tucson is expected to start after the Alcazar in terms of pricing but we do expect the top-end to be kept competitive. However a price around the top-end Compass for the top-end Tucson is expected. The new Tucson has loads of features and luxury along with space which means it is aiming at the premium SUV space for those who like to be driven too. The Compass is more hardcore in terms of being a 4x4 and the Harrier is a more affordable alternative.
