The Hartalika Teej fast is observed on the Tritiya Tithi (third day) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase) in the month of Bhadrapada. During this festival, married women perform a rigorous fast without water for their husband's well-being and long life. They stay awake all night, worshipping Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This fast is a difficult one and holds special significance, particularly in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand.

The name 'Hartalika Teej' finds its origin in a legendary narrative connected to this festival. 'Hartalika' is a fusion of 'Harat' (abduction) and 'Aalika' (female friend). According to the tale, a dear friend of Goddess Parvati spirited her away to a dense forest to prevent her father from marrying her off to Lord Vishnu against her will.
