Why Is Dahi Handi Celebrated?

The festival of Dahi Handi reflects the childhood leelas of Lord Krishna. Also known as Gopal Kala or Dahi Kala, it commemorates Krishna’s playful acts, as described in Hindu tradition, where he would stealthily steal butter from homes. Krishna would break pots of butter (handis) hung high to reach and steal it. It is believed that Krishna’s presence would bring happiness and remove sorrows from the households he visited. Breaking the handi is thought to bring joy and prosperity to homes.

History of Dahi Handi:

According to ancient texts, during the Dwapar Yuga, young Krishna and his friends would steal butter and share it among themselves. To thwart their mischief, the gopis (milkmaids) began hanging pots of butter high out of reach. Despite their efforts, Krishna and his friends managed to steal the butter, enjoying it with great delight. The festival of Dahi Handi celebrates these mischievous and joyous acts of Krishna’s childhood.
