A 19-year-old engineering student on Thursday allegedly jumped from the hostel building at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) in Anantapur of Andhra Pradesh.


According to the police, Chanakya Nanda Reddy died on the spot after jumping over the Ellora hostel building on the JNTU campus. His body was taken to the Government General Hospital for an autopsy, said Police.


Nanda Reddy was a second-year Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE) student from Udayagiri in the Nellore district. According to his classmates, he was a bright student who scored a 9.8 GPA in the first year. He seemed happy on Wednesday night, said Nanda Reddy's classmates. They were shocked to learn in the morning that he had ended his life. He had sent a parting message of "bye" to his friends before taking the extreme step.


The reasons for the student's suicide are not known. The JNTU authorities have informed his family. The police registered a case and took up an investigation.

This is the second such incident at JNTU in eight days. A fourth-year engineering student at JNTU Hyderabad had jumped to death from a classroom building on campus. E Meghana Reddy, 21, a computer science student, committed suicide on December 28.


She committed suicide by jumping off the classroom building from the third floor. She was severely injured. After the students and staff witnessed the suicide, they immediately alerted the police and moved her to a nearby private hospital.


Meghana succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment. The police say that Meghana had been suffering from depression and was under treatment for the same. The deceased was a day scholar and a resident of Kukatpally in Hyderabad. Meghana’s mother would drop her at college daily.
