Hyderabad: A Kanyaka Parameswari temple in Andhra Pradesh’s Nellore has been decorated with origami flowers made of currency notes valued at more than Rs 5 crore on the occasion of Dussehra.

Different forms of the Goddess are worshipped at different times of the year at this temple. She is costumed and worshipped as Dhanalakshmi, the Goddess of riches, during the nine-day Navaratri-Dussehra celebrations.

Over 100 volunteers put in long hours to decorate the temple with the currency notes of the total value of Rs 5 crore and 16 lakh. Notes of the denominations of Rs 2,000, Rs 500, Rs 200, Rs 100, Rs 50, and Rs 10 have been used for the decoration.

The old Kanyaka Parameswari temple was renovated at a cost of Rs 11 crore four years ago. Since then, the Navaratri Dussehra celebrations have been lavishly organised every year.

Much pomp and show has been planned for this year too and the celebrations are going on with much enthusiasm.

Nellore Urban Development Authority chairman Mukkala Dwarkanath is in charge of the events. “7 kilograms of gold and 60 kg of silver are used to adorn the Goddess,” he said.

While many places worship gods with notes, people in Nellore claim it is unusual to decorate a temple with currency notes of such a high amount.

In 2020, a Kanyaka Parameswari temple in Telangana was decorated with origami flowers made of currency notes valued at more than Rs 1 crore as part of the Dussehra festivities, according to reports.

The currency notes of different colours, valued at Rs 1,11,11,111, were used to create garlands and bouquets that were used to dress up the Goddess at the Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari temple in Telangana's Gadwal.
