Twitter Co-Founder Jack Dorsey Says India Pressurised Platform During Farmers’ Protest: Check Out Reactions
Dorsey said that Twitter received many requests to block accounts covering farmers’ protests, and journalists critical of the government.
Dorsey also claimed the government said that it would raid and shut down Twitter offices if it doesn't follow suit.
IT Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said Dorsey's comments are an outright lie. He added that Twitter believed that it was not necessary to comply with Indian laws.
Chandrasekhar also said Twitter was misusing its power as a platform to selectively de-amplify and de-platform people both in India and abroad.
Union Minister Anurag Thakur said Dorsey’s comments were a blatant lie. Thakur said Dorsey woke up after years of sleep and wants to cover up his misdeeds, adding that several foreign forces apparently wake up when elections approach India.
Former IT Minister Ravishankar Prasad said Twitter didn't comply with Indian laws. He said social media platforms have to abide by the law of the land.
Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait came out in Twitter's support and said the government used to try to stop the spread of farmers' protests. He said Dorsey is correct in what he said.
MP Sanjay Raut also supported Dorsey and said he has seen how the democracy of the country and freedom are under threat.
Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal said there is no reason for Dorsey to tell a lie that the Government threatened Twitter when the protests were going on.
Congress MP Manish Tewari said Dorsey’s comments are not surprising at all. He said in the past nine years, there has been a systematic erosion of the freedom of speech and expression in the country.
Congress Chairperson of Social Media and Digital Platforms Supriya Shrinate also supported Dorsey’s comments and said the Centre is murdering India's democracy.
