Mohanlal is an actor, producer, playback singer, film director and distributor who primarily works in Malayalam cinema.
Mohanlal has also worked in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada films. His career spans over four decades and more than 400 films.
Mohanlal has also been honoured with the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan. He is also the recipient of several accolades, both from domestic and international front.
In 2009, he became the first actor in India to be awarded the honorary rank of lieutenant colonel in Territorial Army.
Mohanlal made his acting debut at the age of 18 in the Malayalam film 'Thiranottam' in 1978. However, the film was delayed for 25 years due to censorship issues.
He made his screen debut in the 1980 romance film 'Manjil Virinja Pookkal', in which he played the antagonist. He became a bankable star especially with his villanious roles.
Mohanlal has won five National Film Awards, and nine Kerala State Film Awards and Filmfare Awards South and other accolades.
Mohanlal is also known for philanthropic efforts. He founded the ViswaSanthi Foundation, a non-profit charitable organization.
