Punjab Election 2022: Most Exciting Contest For The State In Decades While the Uttar Pradesh Election was set to be the biggest contest with UP being the most populous Indian state, having a key to the Hindi heartland Punjab sprung a multi-corner contest unlike any other in the state in the recent decades. The internal turmoil in Punjab Congress also made the contest wide open. The fight in Punjab Election this year involves the ruling Congress, Arvind Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party, Parkash Singh Badal and Sukhbir’s Shiromani Akali Dal fighting in alliance with Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party, BJP’s alliance with former CM Amarinder Singh’s Punjab Lok Congress and SAD (Sanyukt) Farmer leaders’ political outfit ‘Sanyukt Samaj Morcha‘ and ‘Sanyukt Sangharsh Party’. Punjab has had its share of two cornered contests with Congress and SAD as the major players. Then AAP entered the fray in 2017. In Punjab Election 2017, while poll predictions indicated an AAP win, Congress, then led by Amarinder Singh, emerged victorious — ending the 10-year SAD-BJP alliance rule. However, even after five years, Punjab continues to reel under the same issues of drug abuse, illegal sand mining, and unemployment among others. With this multi-corner contest, a call for change loomed over the state in the days leading to polling. Punjab’s political future will be made clear with the result announcement on March 10.
