The Porta Palazzo, Europe's largest open market, is located on Turin's main square, Piazza della Repubblica. The market is open six days a week and attracts thousands of visitors thanks to its hundreds of stalls. The massive octagonal piazza is crisscrossed by tram lines. It is frequently congested by delivery vans, empty pallets, full fruit and vegetable boxes, and tourists taking photos. It's a cacophonous, intoxicating place filled with vibrant colours and smells, with shoppers jostling for space. It's a great place to start if you're new to Turin as it's where many of the newcomers have started their new lives. Porta Palazzo is not Turin's most beautiful public space, but it is one of its most important. Depending on which street you take away from the piazza, you'll soon be surrounded by stunning baroque palaces. Turin's rich medley of influences and history is what makes it such an appealing prospect. The two of the city's oldest and most imposing structures now serve as art galleries.
