April Fool's Day 2024: Know How This Is Celebrated In Different Countries

In France, this is known as Le Poisson d’Avril, which translates to April Fish. On this day, the French stick paper fish to each other’s backs and shout 'Poisson d’Avril'

In Finland, after you've fooled someone on this Day, the people shout 'Aprillia, syö silliä, juo kuravettä päälle,' which translates to 'April trick, eat herring, drink muddy water afterwards!'

In Iran, the 13th day of the Persian New Year always overlaps with either the 1st or 2nd of April, and is celebrated as Sidzah-Bedar, or Nature Day and has a tradition of telling little white lies called 'thirteenth lies.'

1 and 2 April are celebrated as Hunt the Gowk Day and Taily Day, respectively in Scotland, when, previously a message reading 'Dinna laugh an dinna smile, hunt the gowk another mile.' would be sent through a gowk.

In England, one can only tell jokes and make pranks until noon on April Fools’ Day. If jokes are told after noon, the person will be considered a fool. And if someone has been fooled before noon, they will be considered a 'noodle.'

Before April Fools’ Day officially arrived in Russia, people would celebrate the warm weather by scaring away winter with costumes and disguises. Presently, concerts and comedy shows are scheduled to celebrate this day.

In Netherlands, people celebrate by shouting, '1 april, kikker in je bil, die er nooit meer uit wil,' at your victim, which translates to '1st of April, frog in your butt, that never wants to come out again.'

In Ireland, there existed a tradition where individuals were entrusted with an 'important letter' to deliver to a specific recipient. Upon opening the letter, the recipient would find the words 'send the fool further,' prompting them to pass the letter on.

In Turkey also, the day is known as 'April Fish' when pranks and jokes are usually verbal and are revealed by shouting 'Bir Nisan! or Nisan Bir!'
