Gen Upendra Dwivedi Takes Over As New Army Chief: A Look At His 40 Years Of Service And Honours

Gen Upendra Dwivedi, appointed as the next Chief of the Indian Army, assumed office on June 30, succeeding General Manoj Pande.

Born on July 1, 1964, Gen Dwivedi attended Sainik School Rewa and holds multiple academic qualifications, including an M Phil in Defence and Management Studies.

He joined the Indian Amry 's Infantry (Jammu & Kashmir Rifles) in December 1984.

Throughout his tensure, Gen Dwivedi has held major commands, including leadership roles in regiments, brigades, and as Inspector General of Assam Rifles (East).

His career highlights include commanding the 18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles and the 26 Sector Assam Rifles.

He also served as the Director General Infantry and General Officer Commanding in Chief of the Northern Command from 2022 to 2024.

Gen Dwivedi's distinguished service has been recognised with several military awards: the Param Vishisht Seva Medal and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal.

He has also been honoured with three GOC-in-C Commendation Cards.

Notably, Gen Dwivedi was designated a 'Distinguished Fellow' during his participation in the prestigious NDC equivalent course at the US Army War College.
