Glaucoma Awareness Week 2024: Know All About Glaucoma And Its Seriousness

Glaucoma, often described as the 'silent blinding disease,' is a group of eye disorders characterised by increased intraocular pressure (IOP).

It can cause damage to the optic nerves responsible for transmitting visual signals to the brain.

This condition can lead to vision loss and may affect individuals of any age, with many remaining unaware of its existence.

Currently, glaucoma stands as a significant global cause of vision impairment, impacting 80 million people and contributing to 12.3% of worldwide blindness.

In India, the prevalence is noteworthy, affecting 12 million individuals, with an estimated 40-50% of cases going undetected.

Witnessing the current state of Glaucoma in India, it is evident that awareness remains a crucial factor in its prevention.

Fortunately, glaucoma is not only treatable but can also prevent blindness with timely intervention and increased public awareness.

Preventing glaucoma begins with knowledge and regular eye check-ups; awareness is the first line of defence against this silent sight-stealer.

Early detection and proactive measures can safeguard your vision and enhance your overall eye health.

Education on the importance of regular screenings can greatly diminish the impact of Glaucoma on our population.
