As of January 30, 2025, the ongoing Mahakumbh in Prayagraj has witnessed a record number of 29.64 million devotees taking the sacred dip at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the Saraswati rivers. The event, which started on January 13, has become a massive gathering, drawing millions of pilgrims. The Mahakumbh is an important religious and cultural gathering held every 12 years. However, there have been some unfortunate incidents. A major fire broke out in the tent city, located in Sector 22 of the Mahakumbh area, resulting in several tents being destroyed. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. The authorities have launched an inquiry into the incident. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has been under criticism for the lack of sufficient preparations, with Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav stating that the 25 lakh rupees compensation for the victims' families is inadequate.
