New Delhi: Crime cases in the year 2020 increased by 28 per cent as compared to 2019. According to NCRB data, a total of 66,01,285 crime cases were registered in 2020. It registered 42,54,356 cases under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 23,46,929 cases under SLL. Whereas a total of 51,56,158 cases were registered in 2019. The country had a nationwide lockdown due to the COVID pandemic from March 25, 2020 to May 31, 2020.

UP registered most number of murder cases
According to NCRB data, India reported an average of 80 murders per day in 2020, and a total of 29,193 people were killed. Uttar Pradesh tops the list of states in this regard. 3,779 murder cases were registered in UP. This was followed by 3,150 murder cases in Bihar, 2,163 in Maharashtra, 2,101 in Madhya Pradesh and 1,948 in West Bengal. Delhi registered 472 murder cases in 2020.


Of those killed last year, 38.5 percent were in the age group of 30-45 years old while 35.9 percent were in the age group of 18 to 30 years old. Statistics show that 16.4 per cent of those murdered were in the age group of 45-60 years and four per cent were over 60 years of age while the rest were minors.


Kidnapping cases went down, UP has highest number of cases 
Kidnapping cases declined by 19 per cent in 2020 compared to 2019. In 2020, 84,805 cases of kidnapping were registered while 1,05,036 cases were registered in 2019. Statistics show that the highest number of kidnapping cases in 2020 was 12,913 which were registered in Uttar Pradesh. This was followed by 9,309 cases of kidnapping in West Bengal, 8,103 in Maharashtra, 7,889 in Bihar, 7,320 in Madhya Pradesh. According to statistics, 4,062 cases of kidnapping were registered in the national capital. NCRB said there were 88,590 victims in the 84,805 kidnapping cases registered. Most of them were children, about 56,591.


Rajasthan registers highest rape cases
Around 77 rape cases were registered daily across the country in 2020. A total of 28,046 rape cases were registered last year. The highest number of such cases were registered in Rajasthan and then in Uttar Pradesh. NCRB said a total of 3,71,503 cases of crime against women were registered across the country last year, the number was 4,05,326 in 2019 and 3,78,236 in 2018.
